Property DetailsThe Quinta occupies about 260 hectares of land and possesses an enormous diversity of landscape, soil types, microclimates and vegetation which together permit great versatility and potential for land use and production.The Quinta is crossed by two streams, one flowing north/south and the other east/west, that intersect in a flat, sheltered area of easy access. Here, nestling comfortably in the landscape is situated the group of farm buildings which have been progressively constructed from the earliest times to the present day.
It has a remarkable group of buildings that speak of its history, both in a local and national context, and which relate to different periods in the life of the Farm. The structures were progressively built through time and in line with the requirements and methods of each period. This superimposing of time, know-how, languages and needs gave rise to an assemblage which not only forms a central part of the Quinta but also gives the identity that we recognize and appreciate so much today. Despite this accumulation of time, the buildings have been constructed in a way that respects proportions and hierarchy as well as providing visual sight-lines between each other and from the access routes.
The nucleus of buildings is intimately related to the landscape, whether through its positioning and the relationship this establishes with the landscape, or whether through the manner in which the access which crosses and runs through the Quinta, is able to control our perception of the structures. Each element was built in the correct place, respecting contours and slopes. Everything on the Quinta, from building walls to the access ways, has been constructed with great respect for the landscape. Naturally the buildings were constructed near to water and on flat ground and in the valley where the three hillsides converge. An access route was created which, running from the entrance of the Quinta, passes by the nucleus of buildings, providing a conductor and controller of the visitor's perceptions.
The following development programme is envisaged:
The creation of 2 permanent dwellings for Tourism and general services support staff;
Rehabilitation of the main house;
Creation of 10 accommodation units through the rehabilitation of existing buildings;
Rehabilitation of the existing Chapel;
Creation of a tea-room with space for sale of local farm produce.
The main house of the Quinta occupies a central position in the group of buildings and is to be rehabilitated maintaining its original characteristics as a baronial house. The ground floor is due to house a tea-room where local Quinta produce will also be sold, whilst the first floor will maintain its current living quarters and reception areas. The remaining buildings with typical Tras os Montes rural characteristics, exposed schist walls, with lintels and pillars in fashioned granite, wooden doors and window frames, pitched roofs, will be rehabilitated and adapted into rural tourist accommodation. Projects prepared for three of the buildings have already received planning permission. The strategy of intervention present in the Quinta, one of intervening in that which has already been constructed assuming the superimposing and accumulation of time, will be maintained in the buildings.
House 1 will be rehabilitated and enlarged through the construction of a new area, deliberately modern, built in wood and positioned at a higher level.
The house will have room for 6 people and will provide an example of a typical Tras os Montes house.
HOUSES 2 and 3:
Houses 2 and 3 are located alongside the olive press and will be rehabilitated through the use of traditional techniques and construction materials. House 2, with room for 6 people, opens onto the central square of the Quinta, whilst House 3, with room for 4 people, faces the water course and is on two floors.
