The State Fair of Texas, 2009

A fall cornucopia of fun, the State Fair of Texas is arguably the best of its kind in the nation. From September 25 to October 18 of this year, friends and families arrive to eat corny dogs (first developed here in 1942), cotton candy and the latest fried concoction (this year, fried butter!); ride stomach-jolting rides; see Texas longhorns, 2,000-pound bulls and baby lambs up close; and have, generally, the best time humanly possible until they do it again next year.

Whether by the light of the sun or the moon, the 277-acre tract of land making up the State Fair of Texas highlights glorious museums in historically significant art deco-designed buildings, established first for the Texas Centennial in 1936. Within Fair Ground buildings, guests enjoy creative arts competitions (from ceramics to dolls to food, including contests for the best chili, barbecue and cobblers), as well as the latest models at the auto show, which is so large it is housed in two buildings.

Whether it is the Midway rides, the livestock, the newest cars, or food from hundreds of venues, entertainment hits maximum peak during the State Fair of Texas. For information and hours, visit BigTex.com: general information.
