Welcome to Paris, France
The city of Paris is the capital of France, located on the River Seine in the Île-de-France region. The city received its name from the Gaulish tribe known as Parisii, who inhabited the area when the Romans invaded in 52 BC. Claiming a rich history of over 2,000 years, Paris has been at the forefront of European political and cultural events, and has made ground-breaking achievements in the areas of art, literature, education and science. Today Paris is considered a major global city with a population of over 9.6 million people. Île-de-France (the Paris region) is the economic center of the country with 36 Fortune Global 500 companies headquartered there. Much of Paris’ business activity takes place in La Défense, a district situated in the westernmost part of the city that is known to be the largest business district in Europe. La Défense is home to a majority of Paris’ high-rises and skyscrapers, which places Paris’ urban skyline approximately 6 km west of the city center. Paris’ economy is diverse, and includes service industries such as finance and information technology, as well as high-tech manufacturing. Tourism also contributes a great deal to the city’s economy; Paris is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, opening its doors to more than 30 million visitors every year.
Paris is home to some of the world’s most treasured landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral. Along the city’s Axe Historique (historical axis), which extends westward from the city center to the La Défense district, there are several other places of interest including world-renowned art museum the Louvre and the Tuileries Gardens. The Tuileries Gardens is one of many Parisian green spaces; the city also boasts the Luxembourg Garden and the formerly suburban parks of Montsouris, Parc des Buttes Chaumont and Parc Monceau. The Bois de Boulogne forest-parklands located to the west, and the Bois de Vincennes to the east are each approximately 3 times larger than Central Park in New York City, offering great natural landscape and recreation opportunities for Parisians. Well-known throughout the world as a fashionable cultural center, Paris is a city full of music and theater venues, incomparable shopping, and highly acclaimed cuisine. One of the premier locations in Paris is the grand Champs-Élysées—the most prestigious avenue in the city, likened to that of 5th avenue in New York City, with exclusive boutiques and retail stores, cafés, restaurants, nightclubs and cinemas. Champs-Élysées is home to some of Paris’ most expensive commercial real estate, with rents running as high as $1.5 million a year for 1,000 square feet of space. Likewise, residential real estate near Champs-Élysées is highly fashionable and priced accordingly.
