Poulsbo, Washington

Though officially incorporated December 18, 1907, Poulsbo’s heritage was forged years before when Ole Stubb, Jorgen Eliason, and groups of Norwegian farmers, fishermen, and loggers settled on what was then called Dogfish Bay.

For years, scenes of the snow capped Olympic Mountains and the fjord-like setting of home attracted immigrants from Norway and Finland. Norwegian was the primary language spoken here through the early 1900s.

As with much of Kitsap County, Poulsbo saw a huge influx of people and business as the United States ramped up its support of forces for World War II. Homes were built and infrastructure created to support the work force needed for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, some 20 miles to the south of Poulsbo.

Today’s visitor will find a close-knit community; a shop-lined main street, a wonderful waterfront park, and some of the finest bakeries in the Northwest. Scattered among the small shops, you will find restaurants and cafes that will tickle the taste buds of a wide variety of pallets…yes, you can still find lutefisk.
