Staunton, VA

Staunton is located in the Shenandoah Valley, between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. An independent city and the Augusta County seat, Staunton was recently named one of the “Best Small Towns in America”. With an area of less than 20 miles, Staunton is home to Mary Baldwin College, the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, and the Frontier Culture Museum; which is an outdoor living history museum. Staunton also boasts of the only presidential library in the state of Virginia. The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum has been a National Historic Landmark since 1846.

The Blackfriars Playhouse, a replica of Shakespeare’s Blackfriars Theatre, in downtown Staunton hosts a theatrical company, the American Shakespeare Center. Among other noted legends, the Statler Brothers called Staunton home up to 1994 where they performed free concerts at the annual 4th of July celebration. Parts of downtown Staunton have also appeared in such movies as “Gods and Generals”, “Hearts in Atlantis”, “Assault at West Point”, “Familiar Strangers” and some scenes for the movie “Evan Almighty”. 

In addition to its history, Staunton has become a destination for those travelling from Northern Virginia down to either James Madison or Virginia Tech universities. Here they find relief from the road or rail by way of the hospitality found in one of the many restaurants and shops. The Staunton Amtrak Station actually houses one of the author’s favorites, The Depot Grille. Besides having delicious food and drinks, the historic bar, with its brass and detailed hardwoods, is a site in itself. The surrounding area, which is known as “The Wharf”, is loaded with quaint shops and other restaurants. Staunton is most certainly a wonderful city to visit.
