The History of Geronimo, OK
Geronimo developed throughout the 20th century alongside the county seat of Lawton; the land that is now Lawton, Geronimo, and neighboring communities was once Indian Territory, but was purchased and parceled out through lottery in the late 1800’s by the U.S. Government after much dispute and violence between the Comanches, Apaches, Kiowas, and U.S. settlers. Once Comanche County was formed, Lawton was chosen as the seat and was named after General Henry W. Lawton, while Geronimo was ironically named after the famous Apache warrior who strongly and violently resisted U.S. settlement for many years, until his capture by Lawton and others in 1894.
