Welcome to St. Clair, MI

The city of St. Clair is located in St. Clair County, Michigan, approximately 40 miles north of Detroit. Situated on the beautiful St. Clair River, the region has a long history of non-Native settlement that dates back to the 17th century, when a French exploration team led by René Robert Cavelier de La Salle arrived at the nearby lake and named it “Lac Sainte-Claire” in honor of Saint Clare of Assisi. Throughout the centuries, St. Clair and neighboring river settlements prospered on port industries such as trade, ship-building and repair. Originally referred to as “Palmer,” the city of St. Clair took its present name in 1846 and incorporated in 1858. Today the city has a growing population of around 6,000 people, and is considered one of Michigan’s picturesque historic communities—a true haven from the bustling urban center of Detroit.

St. Clair residents not only enjoy the city’s small-town, friendly atmosphere and quaint tree-lined streets, but also enjoy a surprising amount of cultural attractions and events. For example, the St. Clair Art Association is an active community organization headquartered at the Alice W. Moore Center for the Arts, which offers a public gallery showcasing local artwork and an annual St. Clair Art Fair, as well as year-round classes for people of all ages. Other groups within the city are the St. Clair Theatre Guild, the St. Clair Music Club, and the St. Clair Historical Society and Museum. Periodically, the St. Clair Society for Historic Preservation hosts a city-wide historic home tour that spotlights the city’s key historic structures and residences.
