Located in Washtenaw County, Saline, MI is just 9 miles south of the greater Ann Arbor area and has a population of 8,034 people (according to the 2000 census). Native Americans traveled to what is now Saline to hunt and gather salt from nearby salt springs. French explorers canoed up to the area and also harvested the salt. These explorers named the local river Saline, which means salty or saline in French. Saline also contains the longest mastodon trailway ever found. University of Michigan paleontologists have partially excavated the corridor where the prehistoric animals roamed over 10,000 years ago.
