Welcome to Detroit, MI

The city of Detroit is situated on the Detroit River in the southeastern corner of the state of Michigan. Founded as Fort Detroit in 1701 by the French officer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the region passed through French and British hands in the first 100 years of its settlement, but finally was claimed by the United States under the Jay Treaty in 1796. Because of the city’s strategic location along the Great Lakes waterway, Detroit became a major manufacturing and shipping center in the 19th century, and eventually became known as the home of the automobile. Henry Ford built his first on Detroit’s Mack Avenue in 1896, and founded the Ford Motor Company 5 years later. The industry spurred much of the city’s growth, attracting many residents from the South.

Today, Detroit is classified as the largest city in the state of Michigan, and the 11th largest in the nation with a city population of over 900,000, and a metropolitan population of over 4.4 million. It is known as a city with many faces; Detroit boasts sky-high architecture, world-class cultural attractions, sports and entertainment venues alongside edgy urban side streets and rough alleyways. Residents and visitors of Detroit love to frequent the city’s best music and theater scenes. The beloved sounds of Motown were invented on the streets of Detroit, and the city is home to the Motown Historical Museum, located in two of the original houses owned by Motown Records. Detroit also takes pride in its theater district, the 2nd largest in the nation, featuring the Michigan Opera Theater, Music Hall, The Fox Theater, the Gem Theater, and the Century Club.
