Adrian is approximately 30 miles southwest of Ann Arbor and 30 miles southeast of Jackson. With a population of 21,574 (according to the 2000 census), Adrian is a charming Midwestern college town on the south branch of the River Raisin. Interestingly enough, inventor Thomas Edison lived in Adrian and opened a shop for repairing telegraph instruments and created new machinery. Adrian is also home to the Croswell Opera House, the oldest continuously operated theatre in the state of Michigan. Acting companies, famous orators and touring musicians from all over the country performed at the opera house from 1866 until 1921, when it was converted into a movie theatre. Live theatre returned in 1968 and has reestablished the Croswell Opera House as a beloved local gem and attraction for out-of-town guests.
