Town of Bridgewater

Just 30 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, Captain Myles Standish bought a tract of land from the American Indian Chief Massasoit in exchange for a number of coats, knives, and moose skins. The transaction was known as “The Bridgewater Purchase,” and the land was added to the existing town of Duxbury. In 1656, the area was incorporated as the town of Bridgewater.

Since that time, this community, located 25 miles south of Boston, has become home to around 26,000 residents, as well as the nearly 10,000 college students enrolled at Bridgewater State University, one of the top institutes of higher education in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Bridgewater is a bustling communty with a historic town center, shopping centers, ball fields, playgrounds and parks, including one on the site of the original Bridgewater Iron Works building, appropriately named “Iron Works Park.” A thriving mill town in early America, many of the shoe and iron factories still remain - some still in operation, others converted into businesses and housing.

The town hosts a Christmas train ride on the Common, a 4th of July celebration, holiday events, and charity fundraisers throughout the year. It shares its public school system with neighboring Raynham and is home to the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.

Residents have a convenient commute to Boston with an MBTA rail stop located on the campus of Bridgewater State University. Plentiful housing options range from studio apartments to stately antiques, Colonials and condominiums.
