South Boston

Long known as “Southie Pride,” the sense of community spirit within the neighborhood of South Boston is alive and well. The area is becoming a thriving residential and business district causing soaring numbers of young professionals to call it home.

The development of the South Boston Waterfront with its luxury hotels, and high tech headquarters, along with the conversion of Southie's traditional row houses into luxury condominiums, have made the population of the area soar in recent years. The Central Artery Tunnel Project, known as the "Big Dig," created a new transportation grid that made the growth in the Seaport district a reality.

South Boston still has a distinctly city-feel with its narrow side streets and parking problems, but it also has four beaches and scenic Castle Island, a 22-acre park that houses Fort Independence, a national landmark, as well as the highly popular Pleasure Bay beach and Sullivan’s takeout restaurant, known for its famous hot dogs.

South Boston is also home to the historic L Street Bathhouse, now converted into the Curley Community Center and gym. The building still hosts the century-old tradition of a group known as the L Street Brownies who take an icy dip in Dorchester Bay every year on New Years Day.
