The History of San Ramon, California

San Ramon, California was once home to the Seunen Indians, who lived nearby to the valley creeks.  San Ramon Creek was named after an Indian vaquero, Ramon, who tended sheep here.  In an 1855 land title case, Don Amador explained that "San" was added to the creek's name to conform to Spanish custom. Several of San Ramon's original families are remembered today and their names grace various hills, canyons and streets.  Some of these pioneers were Norris, Lynch, Harlan, McCamley, Crow, Bollinger, Meese, Glass, and Wiedemann.   San Ramon had many names in the 19th century. It was called Brevensville, Lynchville and Limerick (for the many Irish settlers).  In 1873 when a permanent post office was finally established, it was called San Ramon.

Today San Ramon is an energetic city, and one of California's outstanding urban villages. San Ramon, California has an assortment of homes, parks and stores and a major employment center - all surrounded by the remarkable beauty of this city.
