About Dublin, Ireland
Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland, located along the country’s east coast at the mouth of River Liffey. It is Ireland’s largest city with over 500,000 people in the city proper, and over 1 million in the Dublin urban area. Originally named Dyflinn, Dublin was founded and settled by Viking invaders in around 850 AD. Over 1,000 years later, Dublin still maintains vestiges of its Viking heritage in such landmarks as the Christ Church Cathedral, begun in 1038 by Danish King Sitric Silkenbeard. Since medieval times, Dublin has remained the primary city of Ireland as a center of industry and culture.
For many of its years, agriculture has been the mainstay of Dublin’s economy, but recently the city’s business sector has diversified to include pharmaceuticals, information technology, and communications. Several major technology companies have offices in Dublin, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Yahoo!, and PayPal. Banking and finance also has a major presence in Dublin’s economy, with the city being home to the Irish Stock Exchange, Internet Neutral Exchange, and the Irish Enterprise Exchange.
In addition to industry, Dublin is also Ireland’s center of education. Dublin has a long history of scholarship, which is evident in the city’s literary history. Many prominent writers have called Dublin home, including William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and Jonathan Swift. Dublin is home to three major universities—the University of Dublin (with constituent college Trinity College), the National University of Ireland, and the Dublin City University, which is the newest institution, and specializes in business, engineering, and science courses. Aside from these three universities, Dublin claims 20 other institutions of higher education. Culturally, Dublin has a reputation for being one of the coolest cities in Europe. It has a vibrant music and theater scene, the most popular theaters being the Gaiety, the Abbey, the Olympia, and the Gate. Dublin’s Temple Bar area, just south of the River Liffey, is famous as a nightlife hot spot with many lively pubs, small music venues, live street performances, and galleries. Dubliners love to get rowdy at a number of sporting events that take place in Croke Park, the 4th largest stadium in Europe, including Gaelic football, soccer, rugby, and hurling. For those who want to get in on the game, Dublin offers many urban green spaces, such as the historic Phoenix Park, that are perfect for outdoor recreation of all kinds. The Dublin area also claims more than 60 golf courses that feature beautiful scenery and challenging holes for golfers of every skill level.
From its excellence in industry and education to culture and sports, it’s no wonder that Dublin has one of the fastest growing populations among European cities.
