Sosua – A Unique History

The town of Sosua, just a few miles east of the former Spanish colonial port of Puerto Plata, has a special place in the history of the island of Hispaniola in general and the Dominican Republic in particular. In 1938, Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo proposed that up to 100,000 Jewish refugees be allowed to emigrate to his country, and about 900 Austrian and German Jews did so between 1940 and 1945. Most came to Sosua and, with farmland and startup funds given by the government, they became quite successful during the latter half of the 20th century. Experienced dairy managers created Productos Sosua, a company specializing in dairy products that is still thriving today. During the 1970s and 80s, tourism began to grow on the north coast and Sosua experienced a boom as hotels and restaurants sprouted near the area’s beautiful beaches.
