One of Ireland’s most historic homes, set amidst exceptional parkland, lake and the Carrowbeg River with breathtaking views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick.Westport Demesne is entered via Westport Quay One. Visitors may then meander up a tree lined avenue passing over several pretty bridges to pause and look at the view of the bay, weirs, rivers or the lake and then proceed onward to the gravel forecourt at the front of Westport House. The current house was built in the 18th century and stands as a two storey block with nine bay front and two bay wings on either side. The central first floor window is flanked by roundels, below is a rusticated tripartite doorway with a wide pediment extending over the door and flanking the windows, its tympanum contains the arms of the first Earl of Altamont. Below the pediment are carved satyr masks and at either end of the roof parapets is perched an eagle. The Ground Floor contains the magnificent Front Hall which features the only surviving Richard Cassels designed interior of a Doric Frieze and coffered barrel vaulted ceiling. Its inner end opens to an imperial staircase of Sicilian marble which was designed by George Wilkinson and has metal work balustrades by Skidmore which took the place of the Library and was once an open courtyard. The fireplace is George III Carrara marble which came from Wellbeck Abbey. The ornate parquet floor in the hall can be seen throughout the house. The Library and Ante-Library contain a Cassels fireplace and George III mahogany bookcases by Gillows of Lancaster and were originally part of the Waiting Room. The Drawing Room off the Hall is of particular note with its 19th century sky ceiling and ornate frieze which is contemporary to James Wyatt’s alterations to the house. The Long Gallery which runs the length of the house and has numerous windows was redesigned by Benjamin Wyatt, son of James Wyatt who designed both the fireplaces in this room. The Long Gallery leads into the large Dining Room which was designed by Wyatt and has plasterwork characteristic of him on the ceiling and walls incorporating medallions of classical figures. The doors are mahogany from the once owned family estate in Jamaica. Off this is the small Dining Room and Mahon Room. Down the decorative barrel celling passage containing exquisite stained glassed windows is the charming Morning Room with its James Wyatt fireplace including his familiar cattle skulls into the design. On the First Floor are ten Bedrooms, three Dressing Rooms and eight Bathrooms. The Blue Bedroom designed by Wyatt has a beautiful coved and raised ceiling which is decorated with fine garlands in low relief and the soffit with an oval rose. The Red Bedroom with adjoining Dressing Room is the Master and has fine mahogany Jamaican doors. The Chinese Bedroom is one of the most significant interiors in Westport House. It boasts very fine Chinese hand-painted wallpaper, the design of which is based on the story of the Willow pattern. The wallpaper depicts lake scenes, terraces, courtyards and figures playing games painted on a pale green background. There is no repeat pattern so the room represents one continuous painting, a work of art in itself. The interior has been attributed to James Wyatt and was decorated in 1778.Upstairs are three Attic Rooms which were once the Childrens Nursery. The extensive Lower Ground Floor is entered via an Inner Hall with an Oak Staircase which dates from 1778 and has an oval domed ceiling on pendentives with delicate plasterwork. Located downstairs, you will find the original Servants’ bells, Kitchens, Pantry and Scullery, Servants’ Dining Rooms, Wine Cellar, WC’s and various other rooms. The North Wing contains a two Bedroom Apartment upstairs and flat downstairs. The South Wing also contains a two Bedroom Apartment upstairs and large Activity
