Ashland, V.A., is the largest town in Hanover County. While the city itself was originally developed as a resort town, the city has become a college town and home to Randolph-Macon College. The College relocated from Boydton to Ashland in 1868. Governed by five elected members of the Town Council, Ashland’s is home to around 6,000 people in seven square miles.Although Ashland has become a town full of young people, its devotion to preserving its heritage is outstanding. Over two-hundred homes dating back hundreds of years line the town’s historic district. The city is home to Virginia’s oldest frame church and three Randolph-Macon College buildings that are listed on the National Historic Register list. The Ashland Hanover Visitors Center is even located in the 1920’s authentic train station!
Ashland’s quaint residential area boasts parks and community areas for everyone to enjoy! The parks include the South Taylor Street Park, 13-acre Carter Park and 2-acre Pufferbelly Park. Bikers, runners and sports fans will enjoy the areas of the city specifically designated for these activities. Enjoy wonderful Ashland Hot-Air Balloon rides, one of the areas main attractions. Community Events are extremely popular in the area, such as the Ashland Strawberry Faire held in June that shows the communities commitment to supporting local crops.
