Oakland, founded in 1852 and steeped in history, is today considered a major Northern California city. Oakland is
neighbor to San Francisco and linked by the Bay Bridge and sophisticated rapid transit system, BART (Bay Area Rapid
Transit). Along the hills, Oakland borders five of the East Bay Regional Parks.
Over the past decade, Oakland has experienced an increase of population attributable to significant economic
recovery, desirable climate and location, hillside neighborhoods with San Francisco Bay views, and a rebirth of new
shopping districts and gourmet restaurants. With a population of over 400,000, Oakland ranks as the third largest
city in the San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco and San Jose. Oakland is the also the county seat of AlamedCounty and home of the Oakland International Airport. The Port of Oakland, the largest seaport on San Francisco Bay
and the fourth busiest container port in the United States, is a major employer along with local, state and federal
governments, United States Postal Service, Kaiser Permanente, Clorox and Dreyers Grand Ice Cream.
